Height

Q. Serious question, how do you measure the height of a bridge? Obviously you start at the top but then what do you measure down to? The water (which changes with the tides?), the surrounding land (which is higher on the northern side than the southern side)?

According to (a reliable source) the William Jolly is 12 metres above the highest astronomical tide, but I presume that's the distance to the bottom of the deck (clearance for shipping purposes) and not a measurement to the top of the arches. Kerry (talk) 23:30, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

According to (probably not a reliable source) it's 5.28 metres high, but it's not clear what that measurement represents. Having driven across the bridge many times and looking at Google Street View to compare the height of the arches with the height of the cars travelling across, I would say it is the distance from the top of the deck to the top of the arches. Rainbow arch link is incorrect

Rainbow arch's edit history shows that it used to redirect to Arch bridge prior to August 2024, however, I can't find any mention of "rainbow arch" on that page, so I have unlinked the wikilink rather than changing the link to point there as to avoid confusing readers with an article which does not define the term.
