Viola or viola da gamba?
[edit]The main article states that Flackton is "best known today for his compositions for the viola da gamba". The original article said "viola", not "viola da gamba" and this was changed by an anonymous 87.66.133.236 in September 2009.
The ODNB article clearly states that "Flackton is perhaps best-known today for his compositions for the viola, notably his four sonatas ‘for tenor violin’ (1770)". The tenor violin is of course the viola da bracchia, not da gamba. I propose to change the text back to "viola" unless someone can prove otherwise. Vidoue (talk) 10:54, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
Classical or Baroque Composer?
[edit]A study of the sonatas has convinced me that Flackton's music is stylistically Baroque:
- highly ornamented melodies
- two voices with the bottom voice being a basso continuo
- binary forms
I propose that he be tagged solely as a Baroque composer, or at least tagged as both Baroque and Classical. Mark Pfannschmidt (talk) 03:19, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
