Dialects of Warao

I found some research for someone wanting to write more concretely about the dialects that come from Warao.

Mason discusses "Warrauan" on page 253 (p. 97 of the PDF). He proposes three languages of the Warao family: Mariusa, Chaguan, and Waikeri (Guaiqueri). He counters Loukotka saying that "the Arawak vestiges that Loukotka (1935) finds are probably due to borrowing." and mentions Rivet's and Humboldt's research on the subject.

The basis for his choice of Mariusa, Chaguan dialects comes from Nimuendajú: "Generally only one language is assigned to the family, but Nimuendajú (map and index) places the Mariusa and Chaguan, tribes not mentioned by others, with them." The best version of Nimuendaju's Ethno-historical map that I was able to find was this digitized version, which shows Warau (in square C1 where Venezuela borders Guyana) as a parent of Warau, Mariusa, and Chaguan. – Kilvin the Futz-y Enterovirus (talk) 05:13, 1 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
