COI edit request: expand lead, education, Butler career and major achievements

[edit]

Conflict-of-interest disclosure: I am Victoria Mitchell's spouse. Because of that relationship, I am requesting these substantive changes on the Talk page rather than making them directly. The article is about Australian long-distance runner and 3000 metres steeplechase athlete Victoria Mitchell.

I recently made only narrow factual updates to the article's missing 2016–2018 competition results. The requests below concern broader biographical coverage. I have tried to make each request specific and independently reviewable, with exact current and proposed wording and sources.

Request 1: Replace the lead

[edit]

Current text:

Victoria Mitchell (born 25 April 1982) is an Australian long-distance runner who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase.

Proposed replacement:

Victoria Mitchell (born 25 April 1982) is an Australian long-distance runner who competed primarily in the 3000 metres steeplechase. She represented Australia at the 2008 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Olympics, and at the 2006, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games. Mitchell won the 2005 NCAA Division I championship in the 3000 metres steeplechase while competing for Butler University, earned silver at the 2005 Summer Universiade, was a member of Australian teams that won bronze at the 2006 and 2008 World Cross Country Championships, and won five Australian national titles in the 3000 metres steeplechase.

Request 2: Expand the education information

[edit]

Current infobox entry:

| education = [[University of Ballarat]]

Proposed replacement:

| education = [[University of Ballarat]]; [[Butler University]]

I also suggest adding the following sentence before the collegiate-career material:

Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ballarat and a Master of Science from Butler University.

Commonwealth Games Australia lists her education as "Bachelor of Education - Ballarat" and "Masters of Science - Butler University." I have intentionally not specified a master's concentration because I have not found a reliable published source confirming the exact specialization.

Request 3: Consolidate and expand the Butler University career

[edit]

Current text:

Victoria won two Horizon League Cross Country Championships in 2004 and 2005 as a Butler University student-athlete.

Victoria finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Women's Division I Cross Country Championship as a Butler University senior in a time of 19:50.4.

Mitchell won the 2005 NCAA Division I steeplechase national championship, while competing at Butler.

Proposed replacement:

Collegiate career

[edit]

Mitchell competed in cross country and track and field for Butler University. She won the Horizon League individual cross-country championship in 2004 and 2005. In 2005, she won the NCAA Division I 3000 metres steeplechase championship, becoming the first female Butler student-athlete to win an NCAA national championship. She also finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships and earned All-America honours in both track and cross country.

While at Butler, Mitchell was named Horizon League Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year and Horizon League Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year. She won Horizon League championships in the indoor 3000 metres and in the outdoor 800 metres, mile, 3000 metres steeplechase and 5000 metres. She received the Horizon League Coleman Medal of Honor in 2005 and Butler's top female athletic award in 2006.

Mitchell was inducted into the Butler Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019 for cross country and track and field.

Request 4: Replace the short international-career paragraph with a fuller summary

[edit]

Current text:

Her first international medal was a silver at the 2005 Summer Universiade. She was the 2007 winner of the Great Ireland Run. She represented Australia at the Olympics at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Proposed replacement:

International career

Mitchell won silver in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2005 Summer Universiade and finished fourth in the event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. In 2007, Mitchell won the Great Ireland Run 10 km in Dublin in 33:06 and represented Australia at the World Championships in Osaka. At the 2008 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh, she was a member of the Australian women's team that won bronze. Later that year, she made her Olympic debut in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Request 5: Complete the national-competition record and note five national steeplechase titles

[edit]

The current National competition section stops at 2014–15. The Australian Athletics Historical Results database currently cited by the article records the following later results, which I suggest adding after the existing 2014–15 entry:

2015-16 Aust. T & F 5,000 metres 3 15:58.35
2015-16 Aust. T & F 3,000 metres Steeplechase 3 9:52.99
2016-17 Aust. T & F 3,000 metres Steeplechase 1 9:44.09
2017 Aust. Road Running 10 km (12 km) 2 40:09
2017-18 Aust. T & F 3,000 metres Steeplechase 1 9:45.37

Taken with the existing first-place entries for 2002–03, 2010–11 and 2013–14, these results show five Australian national 3000 metres steeplechase titles: 2003, 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2018.

Request 6: Add current coaching information

[edit]

There is now reliable public evidence of Mitchell's current coaching role in the United States. I suggest adding a short section after the competitive-career material:

Coaching

[edit]

Mitchell later became a cross-country and track and field coach at Capstone Classical Academy in Fargo, North Dakota. The North Dakota High School Activities Association lists her as coach of Capstone's boys' and girls' cross-country teams and girls' track and field team.

Note regarding current surname / marriage

[edit]

For transparency, Mitchell married in 2026 and her legal surname is now Batcheller. I am her spouse. I have not found a reliable published source that currently identifies her as "Victoria Batcheller"; the Australian Olympic Committee, Commonwealth Games Australia, Butler, Capstone and NDHSAA sources above continue to use "Victoria Mitchell." For that reason, I am not currently requesting that the article be moved or that the married surname be added to the biography. I am flagging the issue so that it can be revisited if and when reliable published sources begin using her current name.

I would appreciate an independent editor reviewing these requests. They are separated so that any well-supported changes can be implemented independently if an editor does not think the entire package should be adopted. DBatcheller (talk) 19:26, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
