Should the value of the thermie be 4.184 MJ?
[edit]The article currently says that the "thermie is equivalent to 1000 kcal, 4.1868 MJ or 3968.3 BTU.". However, the modern definition of the calorie is equal to 4.184 J, so 1000 kcal would be 4.184 MJ, slightly different from the currently specified value.
The current value of 4.1868 MJ probably comes from an older definition of the calorie (4.1868 J; International Steam Table calorie; 1929/1956). Now the question is: was the thermie originally defined as "1000 kcal" (I would assume yes?), or was it directly defined in terms of joules?
In the former case, we should probably change the value to 4.184 MJ. In the latter, we might want to clarify that the "cal" in "1000 kcal" refers to an older version of the calorie, not the thermochemical calorie.
The website that is used as a source on this article (https://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/thermie) also quotes a value of 4.184 MJ for the thermie, so I assume this is the correct solution. Shark1986 (talk) 21:01, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
