[edit]I don't have any authority to cite, so I'm not putting this in the article, but anybody interested enough to document it might do so: Scots cummer almost certainly derives from French commère, which now means "tattletale", but probably originally meant the godmother of the speaker's child (i.e., a very close friend, confidante).
