Merging with the "Transcaspian Region" Article

Certainly not. Transcaspia was governed from Tiflis until 1898 and hence not part of Russian Turkestan. Thereafter it was only one Oblast among five, (the others being Syr-Darya, Samarkand, Semirechie and Ferghana) all of which require equal treatment. If "Transcaspian Region" is to be merged with anything it ought to be the article on "Turkmenistan", as it is essentially the same area. (Sikandarji 20:51, 8 September 2005 (UTC))

Proposed restructuring and article split

I propose a major reorganization to better serve readers interested in different aspects of this topic:

Current issue: This article conflates two distinct concepts: 1. Russian Turkestan as a historical/cultural region 2. The Turkestan Governor-Generalship as an administrative entity

Proposed solution:

Article 1: "Russian Turkestan" (this article - restructured) - Focus on the region under Russian rule as a cultural/social/economic entity - Emphasize: geography, population, economy, culture, daily life, social changes - Retain historical narrative but reduce administrative details - Target: readers interested in Central Asian history and society
