Origin date
[edit]Where is the date of origin in this article from? Most sign languges, and most languages in general have no specific date of origin as no one person ever invented them. Is there any history to buttress this claim? Qaz 09:57, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
- There is no date of origin of this language in this article, as I can see. Why are you asking? BTW, how can I claim to be the part of some wikiprojects? Thx Soshial (talk) 18:24, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
I think this is referring to the date it was standardized through the foundation of the aforementioned school rather than the date of conception so to say. If I am not mistaken, this date correlates with its official recognition. Qaz Soshial — Preceding unsigned comment added by LizaW0412 (talk • contribs) 03:45, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
Added the Cyrillic of "Russkii Zhestovyi Yazyk"
[edit]I added the Russian (Cyrillic) form of the transliterated phrase "Russkii Zhestovyi Yazyk" to the article.Sdsures (talk) 21:13, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Moldova Sign Language / Moldovan Sign Language
[edit]The pages Moldova Sign Language and Moldovan Sign Language redirect here, both created by @Kwamikagami.
Redirect from those pages to Russian Sign Language imply that they are the same language or very closely related. This is dubious, however. The article Russian Sign Language doesn't really say this. The 2005 paper "The Signed Languages of Eastern Europe" by J. Albert Bickford, which is mentioned in several other Wikipedia articles about sign languages, doesn't clearly say this. It says:
- Currently the schools are reported to have a mixture of influence from Russian, Romanian, Russian SL [RSL] and Romanian SL [RMS], with stronger Romanian influence in the west and stronger Russian influence in the east. As seen below in the data from wordlist comparison, this strong connection with Russia is reflected in a relatively high percentage of lexical similarity between Moldovan SL20 and Russian SL. However, there are indications that though similar, they may be distinct languages rather than dialects of the same language. For example, it was reported that at one children’s camp, a Deaf person came from Russia to teach the children, but they needed an interpreter to understand him.
If there are recent sources that clearly say that this is the same language, the article Russian Sign Language should mention it and cite them.
If all the sources that we have are these, then:
- Moldova Sign Language can be briefly mentioned here as possibly related to RSL.
- The vsi code must be removed from the infobox.
- The redirects should be deleted until a clearer article can be written.
- The little information that Bickford's article provides can be mentioned at Languages of Moldova.

- You're welcome to create an article on Moldovan SL. It doesn't need to be detailed, but there should be a target for the ISO code. — kwami (talk) 09:46, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Why does there have to be a target for the ISO? What if there's practically nothing to write except that it has an ISO code and that it may or may not be related to RSL? I'd prefer it to be a red link. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:51, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- You provided enough info for a stub. — kwami (talk) 15:49, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- OK, did that. A bit too shallow, but if you say it's better than a red link, I won't argue. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 10:19, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
