Why did Japan sieze Jehol?
[edit]I have not been able to find out who made the decision to sieze Jehol or what events immediately led up to it. I suppose the decision was made by Japanese army officers in China, but perhaps by the general staff in Tokyo, or much less likely by the Japanese cabinet. Any information would be appreciated. Origin of name Jehol
[edit]熱河 (pinyin Rèhé, Wade-Giles Jeho, meaning "Hot River") does not explain the 'l' in the spelling "Jehol". Did the name originate in Mongolian language or Manchu language? Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:59, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- The Mongolian name appears to be Халуун гол (Khaluun gol, meaning "Hot river"). The hol in Jehol might be a blend of Wade-Giles ho and Mongolian gol, both meaning "river". However, Forêt believes that "Jehol was the English adaptation of 熱河 through its approximation Geho-eul in French." (Forêt, Mapping Chengde, University of Hawaii Press, 2000, p. xiv.)
