cURL is not really a backronym

Reasons listed for first letter recursion prevalence may be inaccurate

As listed, the reasons for the prevalence of recursive acronyms being recursive on their first letter include humor, pronunciation, or consistency with pre-existing acronyms. However, it seems the most common reason should just be name availability. For an acronym to not be recursive on the first letter, the first letter must occur multiple times in the word, which restricts the acronyms that can be recursive at all. No such restriction, by definition, exists for first letter recursive acronyms. This also arguably makes the trend non-arbitrary.

If that context is meant to be implied by "consistency with an earlier acronym that used the same letters for different words" then this is not clear, and is made not helped by the examples of PHP and YOPY. Snikerop (talk) 01:52, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

BING seems to not be an example

I agree with you, it should be removed. I even tried to remove it myself because i found the same pcmag article, before i saw your comment, but i didnt understand what's going on with that weird template. Tromars (talk) 18:23, 1 July 2026 (UTC)

Additionally, I'd say remove the `failed verification` and the current citation from the WINE entry. The linked page only explains, that under a certain definition of the word "emulator" it can be thought of as one. This doesn't disprove that the name was based on "Wine is not an emulator".
