Rewrite the lead to summarize the article

[edit]

The current state of the lead (in rev. 1299727043 of 02:21, 10 July 2025) does not remotely summarize the "most important contents" of the article, and needs to be rewritten per MOS:LEAD.

It is currently a two-paragraph lead, where paragraph one (119 words) starts with a definition, and lists where it is spoken and where it has official status; fair enough. However, paragraph two (163 words) is solely about speaker counts and ranking among other world languages. Some of the figures are covered in § Geographic distribution, but the figures of 17M L2 speakers and 267 total are not covered anywhere in the body. However, this section is only 25% of the body, meaning 75% of the article—the sections on dialects, accent, vocab, classification, phonology, orthography, and grammar—are not summarized in the lead at all.

I recommend moving the unique portions of paragraph two into the body and shortening what's left of it to represent just a summary of the demographic figures in the body, and adding two or three new paragraphs to summarize the important features covered in the remainder of the article.  Done. I have completed the initial rewrite of the lead according to this plan. Tagging this as 'done' as far as the rewrite to summarize the body, but still left to do to improve the lead, are:
  • improve paragraph two — what's left of it was not changed very much from before, and could stand to flow better with the rest of the lead and to avoid some duplication;
  • add wikilinks to paragraphs two and three, to integrate them better into the encyclopedia.
Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 19:37, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wikilinks added to paragraphs two and four (previously paragraph three, before the swap). That part is done. Mathglot (talk) 08:01, 16 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
