Boiled or burned?
[edit]I have a nagging suspicion that this needs a fact check: was it really "boiling in oil" (as would happen if water was used) or was it "burning in oil"? The more detailed RS mention a mix of oil, tar and turpentine, but the last two would serve little purpose if boiling was intended but more purpose if on fire. Even with wood executions, flammable liquids were sometimes poured on to speed the process up. The secular sentence for public ("notorious") unrepentent heresy was burning, so my suspicion is that this horrible oil method was classed as a form of burning.
