The author seems to be highly resistant to an early impact fracturing by carefully ensuring not a single reference to the theory, despite it being at least as likely as many of the extreme claims or estimates cited openly
[edit]The moon forming impact, occurring as it did within the first ~500 million years after the "formation" of the earth (ie within 4-4.5 billion years), which absolutely is the prevailing and most widely accepted theory for the peculiarly enormous satellite, and the essentially "earth-moon binary system", can without even relying on any extreme or implausible logic, function as a hypothetical initiator of plate tectonics. Its not even my opinion. Its been offered by more than a few scientists, and the idea of impact-initiating tectonics is also not a new idea.~2026-47226-12 (talk) 06:02, 30 August 2026 (UTC)
- Some advice: providing references to sources is more effective than just saying "lots of sources exist". Largoplazo (talk) 13:20, 30 August 2026 (UTC)
- All of Wikipedia's articles are works in progress, they are not fully formed when first published. The plate tectonics article has not been written by a single author. None of the 2,566 editors of this article, in its 25 year edit history, may have mentioned the Theia impact as a hypothetical initiator of plate tectonics but they are volunteers and under no obligation to give comprehensive descriptions of all aspects of any subject. I doubt that these 2,566 editors have "carefully ensured" that the Theia hypothesis has been ignored. Editors add the information that they find and want to add. The impact hypothesis seems to be controversial and it is an active area of debate among geodynamicists because competing ideas suggest that the impact may have delayed the start of plate tectonics rather than started it. Perhaps no editor has yet felt confident enough to give a balanced description of this debate. If you have information about the impact hypothesis, feel free to edit the article, giving reliable citations to support your text. GeoWriter (talk) 16:34, 30 August 2026 (UTC)
Odd introduction phrasing
[edit]I'm a bit confused by the tone of the intro. The way it mentions "came to be accepted" and overemphasizes the "theory" aspect makes it sound like it's a novel and controversial scientific idea. More so with the whiplash of "validated" and only then describing the concept itself in a single sentence?
In the end it focuses too much on history of the discussion, rather than the topic itself, and sounds more appropriate to something like "History of Plate Tectonics Theory".
Actually, the intro makes me feel somewhat confused as to what's the difference between this article and Tectonics. The sum of all geological processes vs the plate driven interactions specifically and the description of plates themselves? Would be good to differentiate this in the lead, implicitly or explicitly.
