OCR quote from source in Rodney, Mississippi

[edit]

"Petit Gulph,' the town Rodney replaced, was described as: "An ancient settlement lying along the foot of the bluff of the Mississippi at an inlet or small gulf between the plateaus below the mouth of Bayou Pierre." Another record states it was known as far back as 1700 as "Petit Gouffre" and again in 1775, so referred to by Captain Matthew Phelps, leader of the General Lyman party, "From Fort Rosalie to Petit Gouffre is ten and a half leagues; From Petit Gouffreto Stoney River (Bayou Pierre) is a league and a half."2
