Taxonomy above the genus level should follow the 5th edition of Fishes of the World, that is the agreed source for fish taxonomy in WikiProject Fishes. This article should at least refer to the taxonomy set out in that source. See Perciformes.Quetzal1964 (talk) 19:39, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
"most speciose clade of extant vertebrates"
[edit]i removed the sentence "With more than 17,000 known species (including tuna, seahorses, gobies, cichlids, flatfish, wrasse, perches, anglerfish, and pufferfish) known from both marine and freshwater ecosystems, it is the most speciose clade of extant vertebrates" because, well, it makes no sense. I can think of a clade larger than it: the bony fishes clade. The jawed vertebrates clade. The deuterostome clade. Etc. If it has a more specific meaning feel free to add it back but with clarification IAPETUSOUTSOLD (talk) 06:07, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
- Also there are far more tetrapods. I suppose they would be the most speciose group of ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii). As you point out, saying most speciose clade is unlikely to be true as its parent clade will have more species. It might be the most speciose clade which doesn't include Percomorphs themselves. — Jts1882 | talk 13:34, 9 June 2026 (UTC).
