- ... that antique dealer Obadiah Sypher would use an ax to destroy forgeries on the street? Source: The business of dealing in antiques took on a new aspect with the start-ing of the new firm. It is related of Sypher that if he bought a piece of furniture which he found out afterward to be bogus he would take it out on the sidewalk and put it out of circulation with an ax. This gave him a great reputation for honesty, and people felt that if Sypher vouched for an antique it must be all right.

- ALT1: ... that a furniture maker "personally acquainted with nearly every prominent New Yorker"? Source: The firm served customers such as Ulysses S. Grant, John D. Rockefeller, and Cornelius Vanderbilt; Obadiah Sypher is said (in an obituary notice) to have been “personally acquainted with nearly every prominent New Yorker” in the period from about 1880 to 1907.

New article, adequately sourced, hook is interesting (the ax activities reminds me of Peter Grant for some reason) and mentioned in the source. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:51, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
"Exact answer" footnote
[edit]The first footnote here is confusing. "While the exact answer is unknown"? This is placed right after a statement that he was a furniture clerk, even before Marley is introduced. Is it misplaced? -- Reconrabbit (talk) 16:27, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Reconrabbit: Thanks for spotting the issue. I've changed it so that Marley is introduced before the note. ミラP@Miraclepine 21:27, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
