ML drives?

Working prototypes were demonstrated at several trade shows, but good luck in finding one. My guess is they ended up in storage somewhere in Silicon Valley (think of the ending scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark). Joe Newman 17:10, 17 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Technology section

I added this section because the article really needed a picture showing what ML is. Here's a critique of my own contribution in case it inspires others:

  • The ML marks in the diagram are so colorful as to be confusing. Unfortunately in plain grayscale, they were difficult to distinguish by eye.
  • The facts are personal knowledge; I didn't do a good job referencing them.
  • Can it be proved that "the technique had not been seriously pursued in data storage prior to Calimetrics"?

Sanyo's HD-Burn

Is HD-Burn at all related to ML? From Sanyo's page http://www.digital-sanyo.com/BURN-Proof/HD-BURN, it doesn't sound like it.

It's not ML, but I suppose it is related. The Calimetric ML CD-R format incorporates three techniques: smaller pits (600nm vs 830nm), more efficient error correction (RS vs CISC) and, of course, MultiLevel modulation (8 levels vs. 2).
