Performance of Handel's Messiah in Mukawir, 2026
- ... that Handel's Messiah was performed (pictured) in the Jordanian village of Mukawir, with a background view of the ancient fortress where John the Baptist was beheaded?

Number of QPQs required: 2. DYK is currently in unreviewed backlog mode and nominator has 56 past nominations.

Before I do a full review, I have a few preliminary points/ questions. 1) This article is generally a good addition to Wikipedia's coverage of Jordan's geography. 2) The Messiah concert, which is just one recent event, is given far too much weight in the article as a whole. There do not to be two separate paragraphs, spelling out what was performed and how it was funded, for this one event. Are you okay with cutting down that part of the article, while keeping the basic fact given in the DYK hook? 3) For the 2020 event I could not find in the source anything to support "attended by approximately 500 people". Do you have a source for that number? 4) The article mentioned Claude Reignier Conder as a foreign visitor to the village but I found no mention of him in the source. do you have a source that connects him to the topic? - @MartinPoulter: Thanks. I've trimmed the two paragraphs regarding the concert. Can no longer remember or find the sources where I read "500 people" and "visited by Conder" so they have been dropped from the article. Makeandtoss (talk) 08:20, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
- Very grateful for User:Makeandtoss's prompt and helpful response to my questions. There were some small improvements needed to grammar and to citations, but they were simple enough that I've made them myself. This is new enough, easily long enough, and a good example of neutral Wikipedia style, with careful inline sourcing. Earwig finds no copyright problem; I'm happy this is original text. The required two QPQs have been done.
- The hook is appropriately formatted, stated in the article, and supported by inline citations. Given that Mukawir is such a small village, its hosting of a big orchestral performance is surprising, and the John the Baptist connection is something not every village can boast. All articles linked in the hook are well-developed.
- I don't pass the image. Kudos to the nominator for sharing free pictures of this cultural event, but almost all of this image is taken up with the audience and with the night sky. The performance itself and the view of Machaerus are a little patch of pixels. It's very hard to see from the thumbnail what the image is of. The article and the hook (minus "(pictured)" ) are good to go.

- @MartinPoulter: Thanks for the detailed review. Please find some other options for the picture: cropped, , lit up for the performance specifically. Makeandtoss (talk) 11:40, 29 September 2026 (UTC)

I'm trying the cropped version with the main page template. I still don't think it will be clear on the front page. The photo itself adds a lot to the article and you've done a very good thing by sharing it. I just think in this main page thumbnail rendering, it's not going to be clear to the reader what two significant things are in the image. I think the second image makes the problem of visibility worse, and then the third one of the mountain does not illustrate the concert. MartinPoulter (talk) 15:40, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
