Wealth
The information about $1.6 billion personal wealth in the UK is sourced from a prominent newspaper (The Guardian). However, Hansard reports the responsible minister as giving $1.6 billion as the total of all Iranian assets frozen under the sanctions regime. I am wondering if the attribution of this entire amount to Mojtaba Khamenei as personal wealth may be wrong. Is there any other evidence that he is a billionaire?
- Iranian Frozen Assets
- The Economic Secretary to the Treasury (Ian Pearson): The Foreign Secretary has previously provided figures for the total frozen assets in the UK under the sanctions against Burma and Zimbabwe. An aggregate figure for frozen assets is given in relation to a sanctions regime in order to ensure that principles of data protection and confidentiality are observed and the amount relating to any one individual or entity is not identifiable.
- Total assets frozen in the UK under the sanctions against Iran
- The total assets frozen in the UK under the EU and UN sanctions against Iran are approximately £976,110,000. This figure is the total reported frozen assets at the time sanctions were imposed and has been converted to sterling from the currencies in which it was reported using the appropriate exchange rate for the day on which it was reported.
See Hansard 18 Jun 2009 : Column 21WS EdH (talk) 17:14, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- None of the press reports I've seen mention any business involvements, and if he'd actually made that sort of money, he'd be unlikely to bank it in the country his old man describes as state enemy number one. I'd say remove the "billionaire" claim until there's much harder evidence for it. ARK (talk) 21:22, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Until we find any evidence that he really is so rich, I have removed the billionaire claim. EdH (talk) 16:51, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
POV tag
The article just explain his roles in the 2009 election and its related events. The main parts of the text are doubts. The current article has POV issue.Saff V. (talk) 10:43, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Saff V. talking about a persons role in a particular field/action/line of duty or event is not POV. For example, the article on hitler talks about his role in the NAzi party. This does not mean that there is something wrong with the information. This just means that what he did as the leader of the nazi party was his prominent achievement. Same is the case with this guy. He took care of things for his daddy during the 2009 elections and that is his "role". It is not POV. FreeatlastChitchat (talk) 07:37, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

The POV issue with this article is surely in what is not included (which is what I thought @Saff V.: was saying), particularly the allegations that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps controls enormous amounts of money and that that motivates political manoevering. However, I agree that the text that is in the article, although incomplete, is not bad. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 13:07, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Iran's Assembly of Experts elected Ali Khamenei's son Mojtaba as the next Supreme Leader under pressure from the Revolutionary Guards, informed sources told Iran International.
Best to attribute it to Iran International until more WP:RS agree. Boud (talk) 21:59, 3 March 2026 (UTC)- Iran International, around 11:00 UTC 4 March:
new leader will be appointed soon despite ongoing conflict - Ahmad Khatami, a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts, said that a new supreme leader will be appointed "at the earliest opportunity." ... Basij involvement
Some users keep adding that Mojtaba Khamenei had an involvement in suppressing the 2009 Iranian presidential election protests. This claim, as reported by Al Jazeera, was from the rival Reformist faction: "The reformist camp within the Islamic Republic of Iran first accused him of tampering with elections and wielding the IRGC’s Basij force to crack down on peaceful protesters during the Green Movement of 2009". This is mentioned in the body. Such details and contradictory reports should not be placed in the leads. :No reliable sources have reported that Mojtaba Khamenei has officially become the supreme leader. The claim stems from a report from Iran International, which is an Iranian opposition group. If you keep adding false information, I would have to report you and you might get suspended. Citation does not support "fatwa reinterpretation" claim in lead
In this edit (8 March 2026), the lead paragraph was changed to state that analysts have seen Mojtaba Khamenei as "supporting a reinterpretation of the elder's fatwa on the matter," citing the Washington Institute article "What Kind of Supreme Leader Would Mojtaba Khamenei Be?" (Clawson & Nadimi, 5 March 2026).
I have reviewed the cited source in full. The word "fatwa" does not appear anywhere in the Washington Institute article. The source discusses the possibility that Mojtaba "may decide that Iran must move quickly to obtain nuclear weapons in order to forestall future U.S. and Israeli attacks," but makes no mention of any fatwa, reinterpretation of a fatwa, or any religious ruling on nuclear weapons.
This appears to be a case of content not supported by the cited source. The specific claim about "reinterpretation" of the fatwa is editorial synthesis not found in the reference.
For context, the prior version of this text (by another editor) also lacked a source for the fatwa claim — it was tagged [citation needed]. The edit in question replaced one unsourced framing with a different framing, then attached a citation that does not actually support it.
Additionally, the edit summary stated "corrected Broken English from apparent non-native speaker," but the changes went beyond grammar corrections, including altering the substantive framing of Mojtaba Khamenei's nuclear weapons stance and removing descriptors such as "pro-NATO" from the Atlantic Council mention.
I would suggest either:
- Removing the "reinterpretation of the fatwa" claim from the lead entirely, as it is unsupported by the cited source.
- If reliable sourcing can be found that specifically discusses Mojtaba Khamenei's stance on his father's fatwa, that source should be cited instead.
A related concern is the phrasing "Analysts have generally seen him as more favorable to developing an Iranian nuclear weapons program." The word "generally" implies a broad consensus among multiple analysts, but the only source cited is a single Washington Institute article by two authors (Clawson & Nadimi). Moreover, the source itself uses speculative, conditional language — stating that Mojtaba "may decide that Iran must move quickly to obtain nuclear weapons" — not that analysts "generally" view him as more favorable to a weapons program. This phrasing appears to be an example of weasel words that overstate the breadth of the claim beyond what the source supports. A similar issue exists in the "Nuclear weapons policy" section, where the article states "Several American analysts have described Mojtaba was a supporter of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons" while citing the same single source.
The Washington Institute citation should be retained only for claims it actually supports — namely, that analysts see Mojtaba as potentially more favorable to pursuing nuclear weapons than his father. Yugimaso (talk) 04:40, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

Age
Anyone know when he was born? Given the most recent discussions concerning the Iran and possible succession to his father, I think it would be interesting to see how old he is. 80.108.103.172 (talk) 17:48, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- He appears to be 40. This is from the next Newsweek edition, via LexisNexis:
- The Supreme Leader, meanwhile, began turning to his second son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his agent and enforcer. Some in the leader's house believe the 40-year-old cleric might one day inherit his father's position. But for now, Mojtaba has become the Supreme Leader's main conduit to the outside world, and an interpreter of what is happening on the street. "Mojtaba Khamenei thought that the re-formists were betraying his father during the eight years of the Khatami presidency," says an ally of Rafsanjani who did not want to be cited by name. The fact that many of them had been activists and organizers of the popular uprising against the shah made them particularly dangerous. They knew how to work the streets. After Khatami's two terms, neither Mojtaba nor his father wanted to see them come to power again.

Citation (43) removal request
There is no credible information vis a vis Iran or any of its citizens to be found in the 'publication' "Iran International." This UK-based rag is nothing but an echo chamber for the right-wing Iranian diaspora which frequently interviews (then quotes at length) one Reza Pahlavi, on whom it invariably confers the title 'Prince.'

- My view is that he is already dead. The Iranian government has an incentive to maintain the impression that he is alive and possibly chosen as Supreme Leader in order to show stability to the people of Iran and to the outside world, particularly the United States and Israel. Later, they could claim that he was killed in a new attack, which might help them politically or diplomatically. 1, 2, 3. For now, keeping uncertainty about his status may also force their adversaries to spend time and resources trying to locate him. Gharouni Talk 05:26, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
It might also be that Mojtoba Khamenei was killed along with his father. And the Iranian government chose a dead man as the leader as he cannot be killed by America again (to show stability and imply that they are unable to kill hun) TrueMoriarty Talk | Contribs 07:54, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

He is not a Grand Ayatollah as stated on wiki. This title needs to be earned through decades of study, which he hasn't done. It can't be bestowed by an announcement on Twitter. He isn't even an Ayatollah (again it was an appointment through the media in 2022), his correct title is Hojjat al-Islam. ~2026-14995-86 (talk) 08:16, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

The infobox says his title is "Grand Ayatollah". This is however not the case and needs to be changed to "Hojjat al-Islam".
Some Iranian state media began referring to him as Ayatollah in 2022 but that is not his correct title.
Even the wikipedia article mentions that he is a Hojjat al-Islam (rank below Ayatollah) so why does the infobox above his name says he is a Grand Ayatollah? Mr Mojtaba Khamenei studied religion, but he has no religious accomplishments to his name and no mass followers as a preacher, another requirement for high rank and esteem in the Shi’ite branch of Islam.

Politician?
The first line of the lead describes him as a “politician.” I removed this because the claim is not supported by a reliable source. Another user recently reverted my edit with the explanation in the edit summary: “The subject is clearly a political figure and a politician considering his ascent to the highest political post of his country. So don't remove politician.” The user claims that “he is clearly a politician,” but this appears to be original research. How was this conclusion reached without citing a reliable source? Wikipedia content must be based on verifiable sources, not personal interpretations. The argument that he is a politician because he is the Supreme Leader is also questionable at this stage. Reports claiming that he has been selected as Supreme Leader appeared only very recently, and there has been no public appearance or statement from him confirming this. In addition, there is currently no reliable source documenting that he has personally taken political actions. Claims that he acted as his father’s adviser or played a political role behind the scenes are also not clearly documented and are often presented as speculation rather than established fact. Therefore, describing him as a “politician” in the lead should require a reliable source explicitly stating this. Gharouni Talk 07:28, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
- He has become a politician now that he holds elected office but sources with titles like Who is Mojtaba Khamenei...? tend to describe him as a cleric so we should focus on that as his primary occupation. I have adjusted the lead accordingly. Andrew🐉(talk) 10:56, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

One who completed the Darsul Kharij such as him, has the qualifications of an Ayatullah, unless they choose not to publish a Risalah (literary source of Taqlid), meaning his rank as a Hujjatulislam solely depends on the fact that he was, at the time of his election, a non-practicing Mujtahid.

- Al Jazeera stated that Mojtaba Khamenei served in the IRGC during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war and this may be the reason he was referred to as janbaz. I can no longer find a reference to this, as it was in their live coverage, but either way it is still unconfirmed. All of the current news articles claiming Mojtaba Khamenei was RECENTLY wounded base it solely on the use of that word in the recent broadcast. We shouldn't make any edits until we have confirmation from an Iranian government organization. HEH9001 (talk) 02:17, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
- Serving in the IRGC, the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, or any other military force in Iran (such as the Basij) does not make a person a Janbaz. Only those who are injured on a war front while fighting for the Islamic Republic are considered Janbaz. Rank
The infobox says that he is a Grand Ayatollah, but the section under Leadership > Nomination says that "Mojtaba is a Hojjatoleslam, a rank below Ayatollah, nor is he a Mujtahed." Since Grand Ayatollah is a rank *above* Ayatollah, it seems we have conflicting information here. What is his actual rank? https://www.iranintl.com/en/202603032731 says he does not hold the rank of ayatollah. - I was going to make the exact same remark. If he is indeed an Ayatollah, then the section that says he is a Hojjatoleslam needs to be corrected. But even then, you're pointing to a news article that talks about reports he was promoted in 2022.
- This BBC article from 2 days ago states: "Mojtaba remains a mid-ranking cleric, which could pose an obstacle to his acceptance as the new supreme leader."
- And the BBC is a more established brand of world news than MWN.
- Either way, if this cannot be confirmed, his Ayatollah title, let alone (Grand Ayatollah) should be removed. Nawar10 (talk) 18:01, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
- Media are calling him Ayatollah at this point. When his father was appointed he was elevated to Ayatollah immediately and to Grand Ayatollah several years later. Sorry for any confusion. rymich13 (talk) 18:08, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
- Media does not make anyone Ayatollah. To be ayatollah he needs to reach the level of mujtahid (independent legal scholar). Then he needs to gain recognition from other senior clerics as ayatollah and then he needs to gain followers. Then people start addressing him as Ayatollah. In media a reporter basically unaware of this process and as he has an ammamah on his head he will write in the report he is ayatollah.... Mojtaba Khamenei is not a mujtahid, has not been recognised officially as ayatollah. in Twelver Shia Islam, writing a book of "Risālah” (usually called Risālah-ye ʿAmaliyya or Resaleh) is generally necessary for a top-level cleric, especially if he wants to become a marja (source of emulation). He does not have that to be called Ayatollah-ol-Ozma either. Gharouni Talk 09:38, 11 March 2026 (UTC)

Mojtaba has taken a new official portrait after beginning to serve as Iran's supreme leader. I suggest using this as his new profile image.

Description of suggested change:
The second paragraph in the "Scholarly career" section is entirely unsourced. The citation [27] from Radio Zamaneh that comes after it has no reference to Mojtaba's classes at all, and predates the claims made (article is from 2020, the paragraph describes the classes as of 2023).
The paragraph should either be sourced appropriately or removed in its entirety. The tone also comes across as biased, as though the author is trying to fluff up Mojtaba's scholarly credentials, which are currently the subject of controversy.
Not done: Fixed a named reference issue which caused the wrong source to be cited for that paragraph. The correct source is the Tehran Times one cited in reference 24, which appears to support the content, although I agree there may be issues with tone and with the reliability of the source. Day Creature (talk) 15:44, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
- Agreed, according to sources on the wiki page for the Tehran Times, it is either controlled by or heavily influenced by the Iranian government.
- The article does read like an attempt to exaggerate Mojtaba's standing as a Shia scholar. Personally I do not believe it should be used here. Deagonx (talk) 13:05, 17 March 2026 (UTC)

Description of suggested change:
The title "Ayatollah" above Mojtaba's portrait should be removed. The source is a CNN article that says his acolytes have dubbed him the Supreme Leader and elevated him to the rank of Ayatollah. It is of course true that Mojtaba will be called Ayatollah now that he has taken the position of Supreme Leader, but Ayatollah is a religious title that is conferred by widespread recognition amongst top clerics, not one that can be granted by political will in time of war. It's possible some western sources -- not fully understanding how the titles of Shi'a Islam operate, will echo that title. However we have multiple reliable sources prior to his political ascension that detail the limitations of clerical credentials, and I believe those should take priority.
Similarly, the article from the IRGC-affiliated Tehran Times fluffing up his time as an Islamic scholar after he was confirmed should not be used, in my opinion.

Description of suggested change: Remove the title of Ayatollah from his info box, per the article he is not an Ayatollah but a hojjatoleslam. I assume this issue comes from people falsly thinking the Ayatollah is the leader of Iran, rather than a high ranking member of Shia Islam.

There are no confirmed photos of Mojtaba Khamenei in 2026 as of now, with several media outlets dubious of him surviving assasination. According to BBC Verify, the social media management team of the Iranian government upscaled a photo of Mojtaba from 2019 using AI for his profile picture on X. Here is the source since they didn’t post it on their own website: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DV1wPmNlF1u/

Contradictory information / "Ayatollah" or not?
At the top of the article, it claims he is of the rank Ayatollah, whereas later it states that he is the lower rank of Hojjat al Islam. Needs fixing ~2026-22642-32 (talk) 03:39, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
The page says "Khamenei is a hojjatoleslam (a rank below that of ayatollah)" and that is a sourced statement. Is it correct for the infobox to contradict that? Or should the article reflect the fact that some sources embellish his title a little? My understanding is that shia clerical ranks are not decided by fiat, rather some sort of wider consensus. 🔥Komonzia (message) 18:09, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

As per reports from four officials in Khamenei's circle, and as reported in the New York Times article, Mojtaba Khamenei is "awaiting a prosthetic leg" which possibly implies an amputation has happened during one of the operations on his leg, or at the very least, that an amputation is being prepared for.
The article further details his injuries, stating that he has suffered burns to his face and lips and will require plastic surgery.
This information should be included in the section relating to his health as other insider sources have been included. ~2026-15322-20 (talk) 21:33, 29 April 2026 (UTC)

- Rosguill was kind enough to explain it already but for the record; the reason I left that as a response was because the edit request didn't contain a requested edit, making it impossible to implement (WP:SUNS), and any change that it might have been inferred to be requesting would have been a blatant WP:BLPRS violation. Modifying the "Infobox"
Hello,
- In the "Information Box", the section "Vakil of the Supreme Leader of Iran" should be removed, because this position is not a government position in the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran and such a position does not exist in either the political laws or the religious governance structure of Iran. In fact, this is not a government or political position and he acted as the eyes and ears of his father and the initial explanation of the article on this issue is sufficient and there is no need to include this in the "Information Box".
- The "Nickname(s)" section should also be removed because this section is for writing famous and common "Nickname(s)" of people, not names that an anonymous media outlet reposts.
- The titles "Hujjat al-Islam" and "Ayatollah" should both be removed from the information box because there is a dispute about it, with the Iranian regime saying he has reached the status of "Ayatollah" and opponents of the Iranian regime saying he is "Hujjat al-Islam".
The signature attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei also does not belong to him; according to the website khamenei.ir and the response that Mojtaba Khamenei himself gave to the letter from the Secretary General of Lebanese Hezbollah, the signature is different.
