I've lived in the United States all my life and I've NEVER heard this word used in this way. Sure, the 'water main broke' or the 'sewer main was clogged', but never just 'the mains supply my electricity'.

yeah i think that usage is generally seen in british english rather than american english (i dunno about other english speaking countries). Plugwash 23:36, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I don't believe us common folk here in the US have a word for this; the article suggests we do. The closest we come to naming it is to say something is running off AC power, like my laptop currently says "Current power source: AC power." That's...good enough for us. Another article mentioned "line power" and I suppose that's also something we might say. Sharprs 21:47, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Actually AC mains is the common terminology globally in the engineering world, including "common folk" in North america
