Eunice citation

Where'd this name come from? As far as this article indicates, the name Eunice was never used on screen. I've only been able to find it on fan sites. Can someone cite a script or do the show's credits perhaps include this name? Is it on the back of a DVD case or something? - perhaps some marketing dweeb in the DVD publishing company made it up, but I guess it'd be "canon" then. 98.223.168.249 (talk) 23:58, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

The reference on this Wikipedia page is to a Snope's Web page, which claims:

It was the episode where the Howells learn from a radio broadcast that the minister who married them was not properly ordained, and thus their marriage is not valid. The broadcast mentions Mrs. Howell's maiden name, which is given as "Eunice Wentworth." (Of course, the whole thing is revealed as a mistake by the end of the episode.)

But actually, the Howells are never mentioned by name in the radio broadcast. According to the episode on DVD, this what the radio announcer actually says:

Now for that delightful part of the show known as Oddities in the News. It all happened in that staid town of Boston, Massachusetts. The reverend Buckley Norris -- the Buckley Norris, who marries only the cream of society -- is not a reverend at all. He has been exposed as a fraud. Not one of those very rich couples he married is legally married at all. So here's your chance, girls, to see if you can teach an old dog new tricks.

The Howells are not mentioned at all, and Mrs. Howell / Miss Wentworth is never called "Eunice" at any time during the episode (or any other time during the series). Mrs. Howell's first name is never given as anything other than "Lovey", and the "Eunice" idea is just a myth. I would make the change here myself, but I don't edit Wikipedia anymore. The straightdope.com reference is wrong. Watch the original epsoide of "Mr. and Mrs. ??" on DVD. I quote the radio announcer above, word-for-word. It's simply false that Eunice was ever Mrs. Howell's first name. I'm still not going to change it, because I'm done with editing Wikipedia. Instead, I'll continue to point to this article as an example of Wikipedia's unreliability. SimpsonDG (talk) 14:00, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
