This article claimed that "native americans" caused trouble that forced some settlers to flee to The Dalles. Digging deeply, I found that this claim originates here on Wikipedia and circulated around the internet. Searching newspapers from 1878 to 1882 I found no mention of the army being called to Lonerock, of problems with natives, or inhabitants fleeing. I found mention of a diptheria outbreak, the desire for better mail service, and the fact that people were not losing animals in the mild winters. That's it.
