How many to list?

According to this, there are 16 wildfires currently burning in Colorado. How many should we list? Which are significant enough to record? — Frεcklεfσσt | Talk 03:34, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Proposed thresholds for inclusion:

1. Fire exceeds 1,000 acres (4.0 km²)
2. Fire causes fatalities or numerous injuries
3. Fire causes destruction of a large number of structures.
4. Fire results in large and widespread evacuations.
5. Fire costs >$500,000 in fire fighting costs.

Fires partly in Colorado

The Mullen fire has about 20,000 acres burned in Colorado, and 170,000 total. If we were to consider just the Colorado acreage, it belongs on a list of major Colorado wildfires. An asterisk in the table entry for size, prevents it from showing up when sorting fires by size.Tedweverka (talk) 14:48, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

There are three additional fires which crossed state lines: Trinidad Complex fire, Beaver Creek fire, and Stateline fire (A consistent representation should be helpful).

Proposal: List all fires by entire acreage, since that is the first descriptor a reader is looking for and the fraction in one state is not indicative of fire size. In the intro, put a note that Colorado Wildfires means fires in or partly in Colorado. We can color code the acreage of firss partly in Colorado , to mark them differently with a note that these are partly in Colorado.Tedweverka (talk) 21:27, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

Updates for active fires

Thanks User:Greshthegreat for your edits, but please do not update the numbers (acres, containment) for an active fire without simultaneously adding a full source citation. This is a long-term history article, not a newspaper to be kept current up to the minute, so be sure to use a secondary source, and not the time-limited reference to sources that might be okay for a short time in the main article on the fire itself.
