In May 2026, Macklowe published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal arguing that non-primary residents of New York City who maintain luxury second homes while paying no state or city income tax should be subject to an annual surcharge.[1] The New York State Legislature passed the pied-à-terre tax on 27 May 2026.[2] On 29 May 2026, Macklowe appeared on Fox Business Network's Varney & Co. to discuss her position.[3]
