Jonas Coersmeier is a German architect, academic, and author based in Brooklyn, New York. He is Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at Pratt Institute. His work focuses on the intersection of architecture, artificial intelligence, and material philosophy, with particular emphasis on urban housing, urban design, and socially and ecologically oriented design methodologies. Coersmeier is the author of Material and Artificial Intelligence in Architecture (Wiley, 2025), a monograph examining distributed agency across human, artificial, and material actors in architectural design.

Education

Coersmeier was educated at Columbia University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Career and teaching

Coersmeier teaches graduate-level studios and seminars in architecture and urban design at Pratt Institute, where his research and teaching address urban housing, material systems, and emerging design methodologies integrating artificial intelligence and fabrication. He has also taught at the University of Pennsylvania. He founded the international travel program, Pratt Berlin, an international academic initiative focused on architectural and urban design education.

Research and work

Coersmeier’s research explores material agency, computational design, and the role of artificial intelligence in architectural production. Coersmeier first gained international public attention, together with Gisela Baurmann and Sawad Brooks, as finalist and first runner-up in the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition (2003–2004), the largest architectural design competitions in history.
