Need to have a distinct Intermediate Public Transport Page

[edit]

Proposal to restore "Intermediate Public Transport" as a standalone article

[edit]

I am writing wrt to the recent redirect of Intermediate Public Transport (IPT) to Demand-responsive transport (DRT). While these concepts share some characteristics of flexibility, they are distinct academic and practical categories in transport planning.

[edit]

Why IPT is distinct from DRT:

[edit]
  • Geographical and Economic Context: IPT is a term primarily used to describe the informal or semi-formal transport ecosystems in the Global South, such as auto-rickshaws, matatus, and jeepneys.
  • Service vs. System: DRT is often defined as a specific service model (like dial-a-ride or microtransit) designed to solve "last mile" problems or serve low-density areas in developed nations. In contrast, IPT often serves as the primary, permanent transit backbone for the general public where formal mass transit is absent.
  • Operational Models: DRT typically relies on structured scheduling, dispatchers, or mobile apps. IPT is often organic, spontaneous, and unorganized, providing a livelihood for operators rather than being a subsidized social service.
  • Avoiding Bias: Equating the two introduces a geographical bias that overlooks the unique socio-economic role IPT plays in developing countries.

I have restored the original text to the IPT page. I welcome a discussion here if any editors believe a merge is still necessary, but I request that the distinction between "Global North service models" (DRT) and "Global South transit ecosystems" (IPT) be respected.
