DAP interpretation according to Incoterms® 2020 - Terminal Expenses not paid by seller
[edit]The current wording in the article contains a factual error regarding DAP:
- Quote
- Under DAP terms, all carriage expenses with any terminal expenses are paid by seller up to the agreed destination point. The necessary unloading cost at final destination has to be borne by buyer under DAP terms.

However, according to Incoterms® 2020, DAP only states that the goods are ready to be unloaded. This means that, in the context of sea freight, as soon as the vessel has arrived at the terminal and the goods are placed at the buyer’s disposal on the arriving means of transport, the seller’s obligations are fulfilled and the costs switch to the buyer. From that stage, when the terminal starts to unload the vessel, those costs are charged to the buyer.
Quoting DAP (named place of destination) Incoterms(R) 2020
- Quote
- Preliminary remark: Delivered at Place means that the seller delivers when the goods are placed at the disposal of the buyer on the arriving means of transport ready for unloading at the named place of destination. This place of destination may be the buyer's address but it may also be another place of destination, even a place outside the buyer's country. The arriving 'vehicle' under DAP may well be a ship and the named place of destination may well be a port.

Furthermore, under Question 2, “When and how are goods made available to the consignee?”, it says:
- Quote
- The seller must deliver the goods by placing them at the disposal of the buyer on the arriving means of transport ready for unloading at the agreed point.
