Coordinates of ISRO's spaceports

[edit]

Can someone please provide the correct coordinates of the spaceports of ISRO (Sriharikota, Kulasekarapattinam and Thumba)! It would be really helpful. – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 🗿 17:03, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Note: this represents where the article stands relative to the Good Article criteria. Criteria marked are unassessed

The first thing I noticed was the poor quality of prose in the sections on international cooperations, statistics and heads of ISRO.

In the section "International cooperations", it states too many countries (literally all the way from Afghanistan to Vietnam), and it appears to use definition lists instead of standard subheadings. It also has strange underlining in the section on NISAR (statements should not normally be underlined in Wikipedia).

In the section "Statistics", it only said when it was last updated, and other statistics in bullet points, and then includes a large table. I am not sure what to do with this.

The section "Heads of ISRO" is completely unsourced and all it is is an ordered list and a statement saying it is a list of chairpersons, with incorrect grammar and capitalisation (List of Chairpersons (since 1963) of ISRO. should be This is a list of chairpersons of ISRO, starting at 1963.). ozmoozmo@enwiki$t.c 07:43, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

This article covers every aspect of ISRO in detail, and seems to not be written from a summary style. Each section is quite long and could be split into its own article, and there are over 10 sections. ozmoozmo@enwiki$t.c 00:13, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Could you please tell me which sections those are? Please let me know whether they need to be removed from this article or they need to be upgraded. – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 04:12, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
In specific, the organisation structures and facilities section should be perhaps split into a list and then the section shortened per WP:SS as it is very long, covers less important aspects of the topic and not crucial to understanding the topic (at least in my knowledge). Comparing this to a similar article NASA, only the history section is this long. ozmoozmo@enwiki$t.c 04:37, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have shortened the section as suggested, and shifted the information to another article. Let me know if there is any other changes to be made in organisation structures and facilities section. – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 05:22, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have endeavored to implement all your suggestions to the best of my ability. If there are still any shortcomings, please let me know. – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 04:06, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Additionally, let me know what to do with the 'statistics' section. – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 04:15, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am not actually sure what to do with the statistics section. It isn't present in a similar article, NASA, though. Perhaps a second opinion would help, because I haven't reviewed articles of this length before. ozmoozmo@enwiki$t.c 04:40, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
So what's the second opinion? – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 04:45, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Should I remove the section entirely or is there something else I can do? – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 04:47, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh! The second opinion is something new I am about to encounter. – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 04:49, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
As I said, I don't know what to do with the statistics section. ozmoozmo@enwiki$t.c 11:27, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
The information in the statistics section regarding the number of launches and re-entry missions conducted by ISRO is fine; however, the table detailing ISRO's budget does not seem relevant to me. Should I delete it entirely? – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 11:35, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Now that you told me, I think the budget section should be deleted (the section on budgets seems to fail WP:STATSWP:NOTSTATS). And also, please convert it to prose instead of just an embedded list, in order to improve the quality of the prose. ozmoozmo@enwiki$t.c 11:47, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done, Is it good to go now or is there something else to add or remove? – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 11:57, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The Indian Remote Sensing Programme (IRSP) are India's earth observation satellites. They are the largest collection of remote sensing satellites for civilian use in operation today, providing remote sensing services.[1] All the satellites are placed in polar Sun-synchronous orbit (except GISATs) and provide data in a variety of spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions to enable several programs to be undertaken relevant to national development. The initial versions are composed of the 1 (A, B, C, D) nomenclature while the later versions were divided into sub-classes named based on their functioning and uses including Oceansat, Cartosat, HySIS, EMISAT and ResourceSat etc. Their names were unified under the prefix "EOS" regardless of functioning in 2020.[2] They support a wide range of applications including optical, radar and electronic reconnaissance for Indian agencies, city planning, oceanography and environmental studies.[1]First: checkY Reliable.

The Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) is the country's telecommunication system. It is a series of multipurpose geostationary satellites built and launched by ISRO to satisfy the telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorology and search-and-rescue needs. Since the introduction of the first one in 1983, INSAT has become the largest domestic communication system in the Asia-Pacific Region. It is a joint venture of DOS, the Department of Telecommunications, India Meteorological Department, All India Radio and Doordarshan. The overall coordination and management of INSAT system rests with the Secretary-level INSAT Coordination Committee.[3] The nomenclature of the series was changed to "GSAT" from "INSAT", then further changed to "CMS" from 2020 onwards.[4] These satellites have been used by the Indian Armed Forces as well.[5][6] GSAT-9 or "SAARC Satellite" provides communication services for India's smaller neighbors.[7]First: Question? Criteria Breakdown

[edit]
  • 1. Well-written:
    • Prose & Flow: The prose is clear, encyclopedic, and meets standards across all sections.
    • Layout & Structure (MOS:LAYOUT): The article structure was audited to resolve WP:OVERSECTION. Stubby, single-paragraph subsections under "Applications" and "Upcoming launches" were consolidated into cohesive thematic paragraphs or formatted cleanly with bold run-in descriptors. The misplaced dynamic list maintenance banner under satellite programs was removed. The lead section satisfies WP:LEAD by comprehensively summarizing the agency's history, infrastructure, and milestone missions without introducing unsourced or disproportionate detail.
  • 2. Verifiable with no original research:
    • Citations & Reliability (WP:RS): Key milestones, launch records, budgetary figures, and inter-agency collaborations are thoroughly cited.
    • Link & Source Auditing: A thorough audit of external citations was conducted. Working URLs were archived against link rot via InternetArchiveBot, and flagged dead/unreachable references were examined and replaced with reliable, independent secondary sources where necessary. Unreliable/spammy links were purged or substituted. No original research is present.
  • 3. Broad in its coverage:
    • Scope: Covers ISRO's full trajectory—from its INCOSPAR origins, early SLV/sounding rocket development, and foundational satellite networks (INSAT, IRS, NavIC) to deep space exploration (Chandrayaan, MOM, Aditya-L1) and upcoming human spaceflight initiatives (Gaganyaan, BAS).
    • Focus: Maintains appropriate summary style without bogging the reader down in day-to-day administrative minutiae.
  • 4. Neutral point of view:
    • Tone remains strictly encyclopedic throughout. Promotional phrasing and peacock terms have been avoided. Sensitive and controversial matters (such as the Antrix-Devas S-band spectrum controversy and early launch setbacks) are covered neutrally and given balanced weight.
  • 5. Stability:
    • The edit history demonstrates steady, constructive maintenance and expansion with no active edit wars or content disputes.
  • 6. Illustrated:
    • The article contains relevant, high-quality images, diagrams, and mission renders. Images on Wikimedia Commons have verified free/permissive licenses or appropriate fair-use documentation for logos, with clear captions and informative alt text.

Summary

[edit]

The article has undergone a solid structural and reference cleanup during this review, resolving earlier issues with subsection sprawl and source hygiene. It fulfills all requirements under WP:WIAGA.

Result: Pass as a Good Article. Excellent work by all contributors! Noukayami(talk) 08:14, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

The "Other satellites" section contains the text of a maintenance template: "This is a dynamic list and may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness..." Good Articles cannot have cleanup or expansion banners.
I just removed the tag.
If someone can complete that prose please do that so Noukayami(talk) 02:00, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The article suffers slightly from WP:OVERSECTION. Subsections like "Bodyguard satellites", "other satellite", "Space station", and "Academic" are only a single short paragraph. These should be merged into their parent sections (e.g., merging "Academic" into a broader "Civilian Applications" paragraph) to improve readability. Noukayami(talk) 02:02, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Is it necessary to keep the subsection of ISRO#Launch statistics of ISRO in the article or not? – 𝙰𝚔𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚟™ 𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔 02:34, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, it is not necessary, and you should remove the standalone subsection heading.
For a Good Article (GA) review, keeping it as its own subsection is actually a liability for two reasons:
1. It violates WP
OVERSECTION
The entire section is essentially a single run-on sentence listing raw numbers:

"As of [date], ISRO has launched 434 foreign satellites... performed 135 spacecraft missions... launched 18 student satellites, 105 launch missions, and 9 re-entry missions."

A subsection heading for a single sentence disrupts reading flow and creates unnecessary Table of Contents clutter.
2. Maintenance and WP
DATED issues
Raw tallies date quickly. GA reviewers often look at mission counts and check whether the sources are current. If ISRO conducts a launch next month, this section immediately becomes outdated.
What to do with the content
Do not delete the information entirely—just remove the heading and integrate the numbers where they naturally belong:
  • Merge it into the parent section prose: Place the sentence at the end of the introductory text under == General satellite programmes == or within the launch vehicle overview.
  • Format with the {{As of}} template: When placing it in prose, use Wikipedia's template format (e.g., {{As of|2026|4|lc=y}}) so editors know when the tally was last verified against official ISRO reports.
  • Rely on the main list article: Detailed, constantly changing tallies belong in a dedicated list article like [[List of ISRO missions]] using a {{Main|List of ISRO missions}} hatnote, leaving only a broad summary in the parent ISRO article.
Noukayami(talk) 03:15, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Locate these 5 spammy links in the article.
If the sentence they support is important, run a quick Google search for those facts and replace the citation with a high-quality secondary source (The Hindu, BBC, Space.com, etc.).
If the sentence is just promotional fluff that adds no encyclopedic value, delete both the sentence and the link entirely. Noukayami(talk) 04:24, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
