In his almost six decades of military service, BG Gustavus Loomis served in five wars - the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican American War, the Seminole Wars, and the Civil War. During the Civil War he was retired and then called back to duty, serving in administrative positions in uniform into 1866. Loomis was known as a devout Christian.

A 400-page biography of Gustavus Loomis was published in 2011, For Christ and Country: A Biography of Brigadier General Gustavus Loomis, (Greenville, SC: Ambassador International Publishers).— Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.85.196.19 (talk)
