This page describes a single locomotive which ran for 12 years in the early 1900s. It is significant for two reasons.

Firstly, G J Churchward is known for designing a wide range of successful locomotive types for the GWR, using standard components and sub-designs. However, this design, although having much in common with more successful locomotive classes, was not successful. As such, it stands as a counter-example to any suggestion that Churchward was infallible, or that all of his locomotives were successful.

Secondly, the 4600 class is the only orphan link in the Churchward section of Locomotives of the Great Western Railway, and is missing from the very comprehensive Category: Great Western Railway Locomotives.
