Philanthropist?
[edit]Frank was definitely a philanthropist in setting up his estate: about 1/3 of his estate, all of his Exchange Bank stock, was left to establish the Frank P. and Polly O'Meara Doyle Scholarships.
But, there were other interests in setting up the scholarships -- a paragraph of the will establishes that the stock may not be sold. That ensures that Frank's bank keeps going. There is a legacy motive here.
During the rest of his life, we see Frank as having lots of civic involvement, but not much philanthropy. His mother and his sister are often in the newspaper as donating to key charity activities. Especially for humanitarian efforts such as the Red Cross, orphans, feeding the poor, the Girl Reserves and such Frank seems to be absent. For one example, we find Frank on the Finance Committee for the Red Cross during WW I, but not as a donor.
Yes, Frank and Polly donated Doyle Park, but as a memorial to their son. Yes, civic donation. Philanthropy?
Frank's father, Matt, was noted as being "tight." Did Frank take that, too?
