In 1852 Melville was either very active or reached notoriety very quickly as he left his named scattered through out Victoria's Landmarks. Mount Melville in the Dundas Ranges was named after him, and also Melville Forest. At Mount Arapiles a cave was named after him and likewise at Hanging Rock. These locations are all rumoured to be the place where he left a pot of sovereigns and jewellry from his exploits. There is also a story that he was able to evade the police by riding through the Grampians to his hideout at Mt Melville in the Dundas Ranges thereby creating the illusion that his hideout was in the Grampians. Locals have said that a horse yard and hut was found on Mount Melville, which was said to be his. All of this and other holdups were all carried out in just over twelve months, which leads me to think only some of this is true. The evidence I have for this is only local folklore and with out some further coaxing I am reluctant to post it. (Pjbarber (talk) 10:29, 6 January 2008 (UTC))
