His possible consulship

[edit]

The claim that Scaevinus was possibly consul during Otho's ephemeral reign is puzzling. The year 69 is one of the few years where not only do we know all of the consuls -- both ordinary & suffect -- but have some information why people were selected for the office. According to G. B. Townend, ("The Consuls of A. D. 69/70", American Journal of Philology, 83 (1962), pp. 113–129), Scaevinus was never considered for a consulship in that year, although T. Flavius Sabinus, brother of Vespasian, was. In fact, I can't find his name as a possible consul for any year, although it is possible I missed some inscription or publication not in English.

I wonder where this detail came from, & whether it is a mistake by an expert, or just some misinformation contributed by a random troll. -- llywrch (talk) 18:24, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
