Change to mistranslation

2020-01-09 I just changed a mistranslation: someone had translated "lumières" as "enlighteners". This is not a translation of "lumière". "Lumière" means a light. In the expression "Siècle des Lumières" (century of lights) it is used figuratively: the idea is "to throw light on areas of human ignorance"... i.e. enlightenment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.36.200.230 (talk) 14:09, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

Borderline WP:CONTENTFORK?

Lumières → Enlightenment philosophy – In the above section a user asked if this article is a content fork. It isn’t. The problem comes from the title of this article, which was translated from the French Wikipedia by omitting the disambiguator “philosophie” and without even translating “Lumières”.

This article is about Enlightenment philosophy (also known as the philosophy of the Enlightenment), i.e. the philosophy during the Age of Enlightenment.

“Enlightenment philosophy” is the most common name of this subject in English. See also this Ngram which shows that “Enlightenment philosophy” is more common than “philosophie des Lumières” in English.

The corresponding category is Category:Enlightenment philosophy.

For some reason the French article was titled “Lumières (philosophie)” but “Philosophie des Lumières” is the normal wording in French books. The French word “Lumières”, although literally meaning “Lights”, is usually translated in English as “Enlightenment”: e.g. les Lumières italiennes = the Italian Enlightenment.

Per WP:UseEnglish, WP:CommonName and WP:Precise, “Enlightenment philosophy” should be used as the title for this article. And per WP:Consistency, “Lumières” and “les Lumières” should redirect to “Age of Enlightenment” like “the Enlightenment” does (and the hatnote should move there as well).

• Dissent. We have two levels of problems here. First is a choice between the term lumières and the term enlightenment. I agree enlightenment is more precise and more common. But we also have an issue about the subject of the article and the overlap with other articles. Prior to the start of this discussion we had one neighbouring article, Age of Enlightenment. Now we have a second one, Enlightenment (philosophical concept), created by Auteuil-Passy on September 16. I do not see the interest of having two separate articles on Enlightenment philosophy and Enlightenment (philosophical concept). From another perspective, I don't see why we should limit the notion of enlightenment to the field of philosophy : it is characteristically a proteiform cultural movement, not only philosophical, but also literary, artistic, etc. I consider therefore it would be more appropriate to rename the article Enlightenment (intellectual movement). — Racconish ^💬 08:29, 18 September 2025 (UTC)

  The article Age of Enlightenment treats both the period and the movement in general (similarly to the article Renaissance), including a short section about the philosophy.

  The scope of the present article is clearly limited to Enlightenment philosophy and should be named accordingly.

I'm going to work on this article this year
