The documentation for the notable example of a display driver IC given in this article, the Hitachi HD44780 LCD controller, calls it a "dot-matrix liquid crystal display controller and driver LSI". I assume that LSI means large scale integration, i.e., a type of integrated circuit. From this, my assumption is that display controller refers to the usual hardware that is on a video card, or graphics processing unit, or Video Display Controller. But, rather than being driven by a graphic driver (device driver) which is implemented as software programming more generic hardware, the display/graphic/device driver for the Hitachi HD44780 is implemented as firmware on customized hardware. Am I right? If so, I question the wisdom of creating separate hardware and software articles on the topic of drivers. I think, for most, "driver" still primarily relates to software, not hardware. Maybe a better approach is to update device driver to say that some device drivers are implemented in firmware or hardware? – Wbm1058 (talk) 14:03, 22 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
