Can we add side-b route as a name now

[edit]

A while back, I proposed to add 'Side-b' as a name for the alternative route, which got denied. However, now, multiple news journalists are calling it Side-b Fireflame888888 (talk) 00:59, 5 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Seems fair, given the game literally mentions it now. Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 01:10, 5 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think we should wait a bit on this - yes everyone is calling it Side B now, but that was also the case with Snowgrave previously (and then weird route). I think given the multiple names and lack of an official title (to my knowledge), keeping the section heading as-is will be understandable to the widest range of readers. Yojo98 (talk) 01:38, 5 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
As I understand it, this is about including the name at all, not making it the one in the heading. Mir Novov (contribs | talk) 02:15, 5 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's directly named (as of the current version) in the Alternate Route section's first sentence, and it was when Fireflame made this thread. I do see that the title and text of their OP refer to it as "a name", so I guess I'm confused now too haha. @Fireflame888888, are you proposing that we rename the section or were you asking for it to be included in the text at all? Yojo98 (talk) 15:31, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I haven't seen people online calling it "Side B" casually. The alternate route is pretty much only referred to as the weird route or Snowgrave, but maybe that's just in my spaces. 🫀 Crash // Organhaver ( it / he|talk to me, maybe? ) 02:58, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Honestly we should change all mentions of the “weird” route to “side b” as we officially have a canonical name for the alternate route. Surprising as in Undertale, we had no names for any of the routes, so we had fanmade names like “pacifist”, “no mercy”/“genocide” and “neutral” routes. Monathephantom (talk) 14:20, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Having an "official" name doesn't mean much, it matters in the jist of WP:COMMONNAME. It also isn't a certain official name. It's intentionally using formal (ish)/game terminology to be vague and the game isn't like that to refer to the term fans use. You know what I mean? I really don't think that's the term we should be using, at least right now. 🫀 Crash // Organhaver ( it / he|talk to me, maybe? ) 00:02, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Reception organization

[edit]

Do the reviews of this currently incomplete game need to be summarized in nine paragraphs across three separate subsections? Nearly every sentence in these sections consists of "[name] of [publication] said [quote]". How long is this going to go on before we collectively decide to properly organize this section? asextwintalk ·contribs. 04:51, 5 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I tend to agree, it's gotten a little out of hand. I do think it's worthwhile keeping some separate discussion of chapters though; Deltarune in 2018 was a different game from what exists in 2026. Perhaps 1 paragraph for chapter 1 focusing on initial impressions/comparisons to Undertale, then the main reception (pretty much the paid release section as it currently stands), with an additional sentence or two in the plot section focusing on Chapter 5? Developer credit

[edit]

Currently on the infobox Toby Fox is credited as the developer. While he is obviously the director of the game, considering this title is usually used for the developing company, I feel as though it is no longer appropriate in a post-Chapters 3-5 world to call him the sole developer. I'm not quite sure what to put in it's place, but would it be appropriate to change his credit from the developer to the director? ElevenHour (talk) 01:28, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just to cover my bases, I am aware that the infobox credit doesn't mean the "sole" person in a role. However, from the sounds of it it doesn't seem like Toby has been in the programming side of the game anymore, with Toby often crediting his core team for most of the development. While he did develop most of Chapter 1 himself, I'm unsure if a "developer" credit is appropriate for future chapters. ElevenHour (talk) 01:32, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I do think it is somewhat misleading, even if his name is under the "developer" field on Steam/gaming publications. I think director is a good fit based on the {{Infobox video game}} documentation; Fox has also described himself as a director in this interview. Please remove the descriptor "episodic" from the introduction.

[edit]

Suggestion: Change "Deltarune is an episodic role-playing video game..." to "Deltarune is a role-playing video game..."

From the very first line:

Deltarune is an episodic role-playing video game...

While it is accurate to describe Deltarune's release schedule as episodic, Deltarune itself does not fit the Episodic video game article's definition:

...a video game of shorter length that is commercially released as an installment to a continuous and larger series.

Deltarune's "chapters" are not meant to be their own video games, and Deltarune is not a series-- its creator, Toby Fox, has consistently referred to it as a game[1][2][3][4], and to its "chapter" releases as updates.[5] "Chapters" lead directly into one another and require knowledge of the events of all previous "chapters" to understand properly.

Finally, (and perhaps a little too obvious to point out,) Deltarune is listed as a single game and single purchase on all platforms where it is offered. You pay once, and all of Deltarune is unlocked for you to play.

If a story told in literature is bound in one cover, sold as a single purchase, and never referred to by the author with the descriptor, "series," then it is inaccurate to call each chapter of said story an individual book. Similarly, I believe I have proven it similarly improper to call Deltarune's "chapters" games, and Deltarune itself a series. Therefore, "episodic" (as its wiki page defines it) is not accurate to the games content, and should be removed as a descriptor.

[1] By the way, you may have seen in the credits of DELTARUNE, but without other people's help, I couldn't really have put the game into existence. (The oldest instance I could find) [2] We don't plan on discounting the game very often, so make sure to take this chance (to be a big shot) (The latest instance I could find) [3] I don't know what you call this kind of game. It's just a game you can play after you complete UNDERTALE, if you want to. (Deltarune's official FAQ page) [4] Meanwhile, we will be periodically releasing information on the development progress of the game. (Deltarune's official Steam page) [5] Chapters 1-5 are available now, with more [Chapters] planned as free updates! We base our articles on what is verifiable, not on what we consider accurate. Several of the sources in this article describe Deltarune's release format as episodic. Whether or not it matches the definition of the Episodic video game article is irrelevant, as we cannot base the definition of the term on our own article per WP:CIRCULAR. asextwintalk ·contribs. 07:28, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Even disregarding WP:CIRCULAR, the game does seem to fit most of the definitions of an episodic game. Games like The Walking Dead is episodic, but still has an overall plot and it's inadvisable to just start at episode 3. Deltarune chapters leading directly into each other does not make the game non-episodic, since episodic in this case refers to the format of release, not the contents of the plot. Each chapter gets its own credits, release cycle, and is even separated as different games internally. By most important definitions, Deltarune is an episodic game. Necessity of the Chapter 5 Weird route ending photo

[edit]

I think that the picture of the ending is unnecessary especialy during the part where the article is summarising chapter 2 side-b. Fireflame888888 (talk) 18:53, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. A large image displaying nothing more than text already present in the prose is not very functional. The article is somewhat barren in terms of imagery, but I think a good non-free image would prove constructive. Perhaps a Hometown screenshot showcasing art style and humorous dialogue could fit in § Reception. asextwintalk ·contribs. 20:41, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
then why is the photo still there? It's also causing MOS:SANDWICH with the header text. 1timeuse75 (talk) 08:40, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
