I hoped to find here what the purpose of decorrelation can be. In my specific example: I read about a device that performs decorrelation (data whitening) on a signal, but I don't know why it would do that. Zeebrommer (talk) 10:04, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

The article claims that "By comparison, sub-band coders do not generally have an explicit decorrelation step" This is wrong. They do have an explicit decorrelation step, the splitting into subbands. The filterbank typically splits the source signal into seperate bands that ideally have zero cross-correlation (actually the ideal case would be to have statistical independent subbands).
