My late father, who grew up in Lewiston, told me that circa. 1960 the Bishop of Portland ordered the local Catholic schools in Lewiston to change the language of instruction from French to English. This had the long term effect of weakening French in Lewiston. Lewiston residents of my fathers generation (he was born in 1934) tended to be monolingual in French (and in his day, you had to be bilingual to work in a downtown store). Those of my generation (I was born in 1958) tend to be bilingual while those of succeeding generations tend to be monolingual in English. Presumably, it was Bishop Feeney who made this decision, which strikes me as important.
