Needs More

I am surprised to find such little discussion on all of the various dance forms in cuba. No mention of Son, Rumba, Pilon, pre-danzon stuff, all of the "afro-cuban" folklore dance (all the yoruba orisha dances, the dances coming from the south of Africa, Yuka, Bantu dances, all the modern cuban religious dances, Arara, palo, etc). Then conga and all the rest. There are pages for a lot of it all over wikipedia, but it has to be organised in one place to really give an impression of the intimate relationship between it all, and the often subtle and debated influences between them all.

There must be some page with all of it to give an overview of the whole cuban dance tradition, how it all evolved and influenced each other, how salsa, reggaeton, etc, influenced this and resulted in the modern style of dancing to timba music which tries to incorporate it all.

Also the very important distinction between Salsa (which developed outside of Cuba) and cuban dance must be highlighted. I would question whether we should even use the word salsa to talk about casino. And then there is the question of whether the modern dance which people do to timba music should even be called casino, or if it should be called cuban salsa, or something else. But just calling the timba dance "salsa" is really misleading imo, because it is not salsa, and did not evolve FROM salsa, even if it was influenced BY salsa. Even though lots of (most?) people call it salsa, I am sure there are many authoritative sources which comment on the terminology and whether salsa is a useful/appropriate word.

If anyone with more experience of using wikipedia could tag the relevant parties and bring attention to this, I'd be grateful. ~2026-33777-83 (talk) 09:44, 8 June 2026 (UTC)
