Merge suggestion

• Do Not Support Idiot light is a generic term for any on/off indicator used to indicate an analog value. On that, alone, I'm not sure it is notable enough to stand on its own. However, the MIL is a strictly defined standard for OBDII based vehicles. --Mdwyer 02:46, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

    • Don't misunderstand me: I don't support the Idiot Light article. It could probably be AFD'd on notability. But it is separate and distinct from MIL, and as such, should not be merged. --Mdwyer 05:05, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
      • We don't have disagreement. Probaby this page may be turned into disambiguation. My point of supporting the merge is that the title of a technical article cannot be a derogatory slang term, but OK as a redirect. Please explain whhat technical content about automobiles from the Idiot light#Use in cars section cannot be merged into the MEL article and what would be the correct title for this content? Article issues

This article is basically one long HOWTO on MILs. Removing the instructional information and the anecdotes shouldn't be too hard, but the article is a mess without all that and would be some restructuring at least (and possibly a merge with On-Board Diagnostics). Suggest rename to Malfunction Idicator Light

This is about one particular kind of indicator light - would it not be useful to rename this to "Malfunction Indicator Light" and get rid of the pointer required to turn signals? --Wtshymanski (talk) 13:51, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Removing Ethanol Part

Malfunction indicator lamp → Check engine light – Per WP:COMMONNAME. I never heard the term "Malfunction indicator lamp" before until I came across this article. ANDROS¹³³⁷_TALK 00:42, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

• Support. I'd never heard this term before either, and the sole reference in the article, the US Code of Federal Regulations, calls it a "malfunction indicator light" (not "lamp"). following US usage.
