The cafe WAS the cellar. There was nothing on the ground floor - you went down a dingy staircase, with a toilet on the half landing (to which you had to obtain the key), to the cafe in the cellar (which went under the pavement in parallel vaults), then there was a squeeze through to a second vaulted room which was the club in the evening. There was a wonderful Yorkstone flag floor, which after a change of ownership to some hippies was 'improved' by being covered in vinyl! I've never been back after it became a 'Turkish Hareem' decor restaurant.

I am surprised that apparently 'Nights in the Cellar. Bunjies Coffee House and Folk Cellar: a history' by Peter Cadle has not been used, as it apparently is the definitive account. Wolstan Dixie (talk) 15:51, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
