Outdated information formatted as present that may contribute to cultural bias
[edit]I find the phrasing of the following to be somewhat problematic:
"...but the genre has been sustained by its usefulness in spreading the word of historical and current events to the large illiterate population of Belize.... The Brukdown singer is often the bearer of news, and the words of the composer are widely accepted as fact, despite the gossip-like nature of the genre."
The implication that Belize currently has a high iliteracy rate is innacurate, as is the implication that large swaths of the population recieve news primarily from music and take the statements heard in music as undisputed fact. As a Belizean, the writing here reads as indicating a significant bias against the intelligence of my people, even accounting for the fact that the source cited is 28 years old.
I am aware that I am unaware of exact standards for sources that can be cited, but I will still leave some evidence of my statement on the literacy rate here:
