Doubts on Baiswar being a territorial group within kurmis
[edit]Hi, the article ,it seems, has undergone a recent revision where the latest edit has made Baiswars as a territorial subgroup within the Kurmi jaati. The source cited is "The Other Lucknow" by Mr. Nadeem Hasnain. I am not sure of the accuracy of the source as Baiswars' own traditions and earlier British works speak of a different origin . Moreover, in page number 49 of the source cited, the author writes that "Barais(a different jaati) has social divisions namely Chaurasiya, Katiyar, Nag, Jaiswar" while in the next page, he writes "kurmis have several territorial groups namely Gangwar, Baiswar, Jaiswar, Katiyar and Sachan" . Thus, we see that 'katiyar' and 'Jaiswar' are present in two different endogamous jaatis which seems to be a mistake made by the author.
Also, if one goes by current classification, Kurmis are OBC(Other Backward Class) in Uttar Pradesh http://ncbc.nic.in/User_Panel/GazetteResolution.aspx?Value=mPICjsL1aLvxbegUDuc3MN4eB5E3Ecc1drRPAf1qXQ%2bl0IqIfhjN1xHrf4i2h5g0 while Baiswars seem to be a Scheduled caste group .
