• Article passes criteria. New enough (Promoted to GA within 7 days of nom), long enough. Since article passed GA review, pretty easily clears the DYK criteria for being well-sourced, as well as presentable. Earwig flags two sources with as mildly high "possible violations" but they're direct quotes. Maybe(?) could use some tweaking/paraphrasing to improve article, but for the purposes of appearing on the DYK section, that shouldn't impede it from inclusion tbh. Hooks are sourced properly. Voice actors section

The "Voice actors" section doesn't have the necessary sources. It is written in the section that the first name of Ash in the series was "Casey", but it isn't stated in the source at the end of the paragraph. Also, there aren't any sources about the original voice actors (Rica Matsumoto and Hana Takeda). I feel like this section should be improved, maybe including more details about the original voice actor in order to give a more WP:GLOBAL view of the subject. I've just added a few sources on Matsumoto, though I couldn't find as much dev info as Natochenney or Taylor. There may be some stuff I'm missing in Japanese sources, so I'll likely look into that, but for now Matsumoto now has some citations referencing her tenure, and likely more can be added worst comes to worst. Takeda I ended up cutting due to the fact I couldn't find sources discussing her performance at all. I'll probably look deeper into that as well but for now the issues you've brought up have been addressed. If you happen to have any sources handy on those areas I mentioned, I'd greatly appreciate them as well. Has one ever considered Magneton? Pokelego999 (talk) 20:22, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Anon's asking to have the last parameter added back to the infobox, but Last is seldom used on video game characters as it often becomes outdated in a short time or already is (case in point the earlier mess with the Metal Gear characters).--Kung Fu Man (talk) 07:10, 1 November 2025 (UTC)

Since all the other Pokémon character pages have information about their video game counterparts, Ash should have information about Red on his

I get Red and Ash are technically different characters. But their still counterparts to eachother. Ash is to Red the same way Brock from the anime is to Brock from the games. Or how Game Mario is to Illumination Mario. Or how Spider-Man from the comics is to Spider-Man from the MCU. There are plenty of characters from different Pokémon media that a plethora of differences yet have the same page. Misty in the games is nowhere near as nagging or ill-tempered as her anime counterpart. Giovanni in the games isn't as cruel, calculating, or distant as his anime version. Red and Ash aren't even that different.

Ash and Red are both from Pallet Town, mentored by Professor Oak, have a his grandson as a cocky arrogant rival, have Pikachu, and become the greatest trainers of their time to name a few.

@BrickIsGone Despite being based on Red as a base, Ash is a distinct character from Red; Red's character in the games is entirely different to Ash's, and beyond a few basic similarities are hardly the same at all. Compared to other characters, who most of the time maintain the same name, role, and largely similar characters, Ash is hardly a one to one adaptation. Sources themselves hardly discuss Ash and Red as the same, either, unlike someone like Brock or Misty.

The inclusion of discussion about Red's game role doesn't really help to understand Ash's character when they're so different, whereas with someone like Brock or Misty you see the origins of their expanded media roles and character, for example. I very much disagree. Let me explain.

"Red's character in the games is entirely different to Ash..." What character? Red doesn't have a personality in Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black 2, White 2, Sun, Moon, Let's Go, Pikachu, or Let's Go, Eevee! as far as I'm aware. While he is portrayed as silent and stoic, I don't actually think this is the case. Red's "..." that appear whenever he speaks are actually ellipses mean't to symbolize the words of the player, like a "fill in the blank". Why would they do this? Not because Red is inherently a silent or stoic individual but because he's supposed to be the player, he's meant to be a nobody so someone can project themselves onto him. Red doesn't have a fundamentally different character from Ash, because he doesn't have one at all. Besides, even if he was silent, it wouldn't change the fact that various depictions of the character that share his name vastly diverge from such a depiction, such as the Adventures and Pocket Monsters mangas, Pokémon Origins (I will admit I have yet to watch it in its entirety but from the scenes I have watched I do see a fully speaking non-stoic Red), and more, yet we don't consider those counterparts to not be Red.

However it is worth noting that Red's name during gen 1 (1996-1998) was "Ash" (Satoshi in Japanese) according to various official sources like strategy guides and promotional material. Why did they change the name? While I don't have any official sources answering this, it's most likely that it was because "Red" was less distinct so they chose it to preserve the idea that he is the player character, the idea that you are the champion at Mt. Silver, the one who conquered the Indigo League and caught all 150 Pokémon.

Same role? Yes, this is by far the biggest similarity between the two. Both originate from Pallet Town, are the arch-rival's of Oak's cocky grandson, use Pikachu and all three starters, fight Team Rocket, become legends etc. They aren't only both the protagonists in their respective medium. Red is the standin for the player, and Ash is the standin for the viewer. Post- Kanto, Red is regarded as a legend, and a hero, late seasons Ash, he is recognized, famous, sort of a living legend.

"Ash is hardly a one to one adaptation" literally none of the characters in the anime are. I believe the best example is Giovanni. Giovanni in the games is the main antagonist, a calculating figure who gets his hands dirty, a mob boss in every sense. Then in the anime he is a background overarching villain, who is less a mob boss and a mastermind who sits in a chair directing his pawns. Acting extremely cruel towards various individuals like Mewtwo or Gary for no reason. Unlike the grounded mobster from the games who was pragmatic yet showed respect to his foes. The version in the anime sadistically grins at the suffering of his enemies and laughs when his goals of world domination are going according to plan. Yet there still just different versions of the same character just one is more exaggerated then the other. There are also lots of characters in media that have adaptations that differ significantly from their source material even if I don't think Red and Ash are all that different at all.

The exact same thing applies to Ash and Red.

Are Red and Ash the same character in the same continuity? Obviously not, but they are what Giovanni from the games is to Giovanni from the anime, Spider-Man from the Marvel comics is to Spider-Man from the MCU, what Harry Potter from the books is to Harry Potter from the movies, etc.

There's also the design aspects but I feel that part is obvious.

Red is infact part of Ash's origins and the two characters could not exist without each other. BrickIsGone (talk) 03:40, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

Additional note: since the other character's pages are mostly anime focused anyway, I don't think adding information about Red would be enough to deter the page, but it's still good to have as the two characters are the same just different versions of each other.
