This is supported by historical sources describing substantial regional overlap between the terms Arain and Maliar. Ibbetson's Panjab Castes discusses the Arain, Baghban and Maliar together and notes that in western Punjab the term Arain was sometimes applied to market-gardeners. A modern scholarly study of colonial Punjab also discusses the historical use of Mali, Maliar and Baghban in connection with Arain identity.
