Stephen Hendry was the defending champion, having defeated Mark Williams 18‍–‍11 in the final of the 1999 World Championship to win his seventh World title. He lost his first-round match against Stuart Bingham, a qualifier who was making his debut at the Crucible. Williams defeated Matthew Stevens 18‍–‍16 in the first-ever all-Welsh World final to claim his maiden World title. The main stage of the tournament produced 54 century breaks, of which the highest was a 143 compiled by Stevens in his semi-final match against Joe Swail.
