Ramon Bloomberg (born 1972) is a British filmmaker and writer. He was born in Sheffield, England, and is based in London.[1] He has worked in documentary and short film, music videos and advertising. His documentary Area K: A Political Fishing Documentary, co-directed with Nadav Harel, won Best Documentary at the 2002 Brooklyn Film Festival and received a Certificate of Merit at the 2002 San Francisco International Film Festival.[2][3] His 2014 short film T's World: The Over-identification of Terry Thompson received an honourable mention at DOK Leipzig.[4]
Career
[edit]In the early 2000s, Bloomberg co-directed Area K: A Political Fishing Documentary with filmmaker Nadav Harel. The documentary follows a business partnership between Palestinian fishermen from the Gaza Strip and Israeli counterparts living in Dugit.[2] The film was also included in the World Cinema programme at the 2002 Film Fest Gent.[5] At the Brooklyn Film Festival it received the award for Best Documentary, while the San Francisco International Film Festival gave it a Certificate of Merit in the current-events category.[2][3]
Bloomberg subsequently worked in music videos and advertising. A 2006 press release from Accor, issued for a Novotel advertising campaign he directed, credited his earlier music-video work for acts including Metric, My Robot Friend and Maxïmo Park.[6] In 2007 Bloomberg was among the filmmakers included in Saatchi & Saatchi's New Directors Showcase.[7] His short film Horse Territory later appeared in the 2008 AFI Fest programme.[8]
His later short films include Green Spirit, Chinese Shadows, Trans Vector, Glacis and T's World: The Over-identification of Terry Thompson.[1] T's World concerns the events surrounding the 2011 release of exotic animals from a private property near Zanesville, Ohio. A DOK Leipzig programme description notes that the film combines live-action material, police-car video, satellite imagery and computer-animated re-enactments.[9] It received an honourable mention at DOK Leipzig in 2014.[4]
Bloomberg has also written on media and technology. In 2015 the journal Culture Machine published his essay "Dancing to a Tune: The Drone as Political and Historical Assemblage", which examines the term "drone" in technological, political and cultural contexts.[10]
