Prevotella communis is a species of strictly anaerobic bacteria in the family Prevotellaceae and genus Prevotella. It was originally isolated from the rumen of sheep.[1]The specific epithet communis is Latin for "common".[2]
Description
[edit]Cells of P. communis are Gram-negative, short rods approximately 2 by 1 μm in size. The bacterium is strictly anaerobic, non-motile, and obligately saccharolytic. Growth occurs at 30–45 °C, with optimum growth between 34 and 42 °C. The species is bile-sensitive, with no growth reported at 0.75% bile.[1]
P. communis grows on several carbohydrates, including glucose, lactose, sucrose, xylose, cellobiose, raffinose, and inulin. Major fermentation products are acetate and succinate.[1]
