Mount Talang (Indonesian: Gunung Talang), also known as Salasi or Sulasih,[2] is an active stratovolcano in West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located in Solok Regency, approximately three hours' drive from the provincial capital of Padang.[2] Talang has two crater lakes on its flanks, the largest of which is 1 by 2 kilometres (0.62 mi × 1.24 mi) wide and is called Lake Talang.

Geography

Mount Talang is situated in the highlands of West Sumatra, within Solok Regency. The volcano is part of the Bukit Barisan mountain range, which stretches along the western side of Sumatra. The nearest major town is Solok, located to the northeast.

The mountain has two main cones: Talang Jantan (east) and Talang Betina (west), approximately one kilometre apart.[3] The summit area is forested, with the upper slopes featuring fumarolic activity and areas of burnt vegetation from past eruptions.[2]

The volcano is surrounded by tea plantations, particularly on its southern slopes near the village of Air Batumbuk.[2] The region is sparsely populated, with several villages on the lower slopes, including Bukit Sileh, Batu Bajanjang, and Nagari Limau Lunggo.

Geology

Talang is a stratovolcano of Pleistocene age, part of the Sunda Arc volcanic system.[1] The steep-sided cone exhibits fumarolic activity but has no crater; it appears to have grown within a larger caldera.[4] An older volcanic peak, Pasar Arbaao, is located approximately 1.5 km to the west.[4]

The volcanic complex is located in an active zone of the Great Sumatran fault, specifically on the Sumani and Suliti segments, making it highly sensitive to tectonic triggers.[3] Historical eruptions have mostly involved small-to-moderate explosive activity, first documented in the 19th century, originating from a series of small craters in a valley on the northeastern flank.[4]

The volcanic history of Talang is divided into three periods: Pra-Talang (Pre-Talang), Talang Tua (Old Talang), and Talang Muda (Young Talang).

Crater lakes

Talang has two crater lakes on its flanks. The larger, Lake Talang, measures approximately 1 by 2 kilometres (0.62 mi × 1.24 mi) and is located on the northeastern side of the volcano.[1] The smaller lake, Lake Dibawah, lies to the northwest of the main edifice.[4]

Eruptive history

According to the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program, Mount Talang has had at least 13 confirmed eruptions in the past 10,000 years, all documented by historical records or observations.[5] Since 1900, it has had 7 eruptions, and has been active during 7 years out of 127, meaning Talang has been in eruption on average once every 18.1 years.[5]

Recorded eruptions occurred in 1833, 1843, 1845, and 1876, with some originating from flank vents.

Eruptions were documented in 1963, 1967–1968, and 1986.[2]

2005 eruption

On 12 April 2005, during 03:40–06:00 local time, an eruption at Talang produced an ash plume that rose to a height of approximately 1 km above the crater (about 12,800 ft above sea level).[4] About 4 mm of ash fell in the village of Bukit Sileh, northeast of the volcano.[4] The Alert Level was raised to 4, the highest level.[4]

More than 25,000 residents from five villages on the slopes of the volcano were evacuated to safer areas.[6][7] On 13 April, volcanic and seismic activity decreased compared to the previous day, with a "white-gray ash plume" rising 250 m above Kawah Mati crater, and gas emitted from Gabuo Atas crater.[4] Talang remained at Alert Level 4.[4]

Geologists have suggested that the 2005 eruption may have been triggered by the December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.[1][8] Historical records show that the 2005 eruption was also preceded by a tectonic earthquake, similar to the 2005 event being triggered by the Mentawai earthquake (M 6.8).[3]

2007 eruptions

In March 2007, volcanic activity increased, marked by three white smoke eruptions and 1,757 volcanic earthquakes, leading to an elevation of the alert status to Level III (Siaga).[9]

On 27 November 2007, an eruption occurred from the main crater, producing brown smoke rising 800–1,000 metres.[10] The eruption continued through December, with plumes observed from the Main crater, South crater, and Gabuo Atas solfatara field.[11] On 11 December, "smoke" rose to a maximum altitude of 3.3 km (10,800 ft) above sea level from the Main crater.[11] The alert level was lowered to Level 2 on 14 December based on visual observations and a decrease in the number of earthquakes.[11] Visitors were advised not to go within a 2-km radius of the summit.[11]

Recent activity (2025–2026)

Since September 2024, the number of volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes at Talang has been increasing.[12] Throughout 2025, four VT earthquake swarms occurred: on 8 April, 25 July, 23 September, and 9 October.[3] The swarm on 23 September was characterized by VT events that clustered in the crater area at shallower depths than the previous swarms, suggesting magma migration toward the surface.[12]

On 10 December 2025, at 02:48 local time, a tectonic earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred 18 km from Solok at a depth of 10 km.[12] Following this earthquake, a sharp increase in VT earthquakes was recorded, with 227 events occurring by 09:00.[3][12] The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the alert level from Level I (Normal) to Level II (Waspada, or "Advisory") at 10:00 on 10 December 2025.[13] The public was advised to maintain a distance of at least 2 km from the craters (South Crater and Main Crater).[12]

Visual monitoring from the observation post showed no dramatic changes, only white smoke rising 10–75 metres above the summit.[3] However, instrumental data indicated significant unrest, with the potential for further escalation.[3]

As of mid-2026, volcanic seismicity at Talang was observed to have decreased, though monitoring continues.[14]

Ecology

Mount Talang supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, with forest types including hill dipterocarp forest, upper dipterocarp forest, montane forest, and ericaceous forest.

Nepenthes pitcher plants

The mountain is home to five species of Nepenthes pitcher plants: N. bongso, N. inermis, N. pectinata, N. spathulata, and the endemic N. talangensis.[15] Nepenthes talangensis is named after the mountain and is thought to be endemic to its upper slopes.[16][17]

A 2024 study found that the population of N. talangensis is very small, with only 23 individuals recorded, and it grows sympatrically with N. bongso and N. inermis, forming natural hybrids.[15] The dominant tree species in the Nepenthes habitat include Lithocarpus conocarpus, Camellia lanceolata, Syzygium acuminatissimum, Adinandra dumosa, and Dehaasia sp.[15] Researchers have suggested that N. talangensis should be considered Critically Endangered and have outlined possible conservation actions.[15]

Wildlife

The mountain is rich in birdlife and monkeys, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.[2] Wild pigs are also present on the slopes.[2]

Recreation and tourism

Mount Talang is one of the most accessible volcanoes in Sumatra, located just three hours' drive from Padang.[2] It is a popular weekend hike for students and tourists from across West Sumatra.[2]

There are two main routes to the summit:[2]

  • Air Batumbuk route – Starting from the tea plantation side at Air Batumbuk (1,465 m), this is the more popular route. The trail passes through Pesanggrahan (1,510 m), a camping spot with a water source, and continues to a main camping area at 2,195 m below the summit cliffs, where active fumaroles are present. The summit is less than two hours from this camp.
  • Batu Bajanjang / Bukit Sileh route – Starting from the village of Batu Bajanjang (1,371 m) on the northeastern side, this route is less frequented. The trail passes through farmland and dense forest, with views of Lake Dibawah.

Visitors are advised to check the volcanic activity status with local authorities before attempting the climb and to maintain a safe distance from the craters.[2] The dry season offers better climbing conditions with more stable trails and improved visibility.
