Matir Poster (Bengali: মাটির পোস্টার; lit. Clay Poster) is a terracotta relief-style promotional artwork created for the 2022 Bangladeshi film Kagoj (The Paper). Unlike conventional printed film posters, it was handmade from clay using traditional sculptural techniques. In 2023, the artwork was preserved by the Bangladesh Film Archive, where it is displayed as part of the archive's museum collection.
History
[edit]The artwork was created under the supervision of film director Ali Zulfikar Zahedi as part of the promotional campaign for Kagoj (The Paper). It was designed by artist Shunno Rinku with the assistance of two other artists. Standing approximately six feet (1.8 m) tall, the relief-style terracotta poster took about one month to complete and reportedly cost around BDT 200,000.
The project aimed to combine traditional Bengali terracotta art with contemporary film promotion. Two copies of the artwork were produced. One was exhibited at the Blockbuster corridor of Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka, while the other was displayed at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC).[1]
Preservation
[edit]On 6 April 2023, the terracotta poster, together with a digital copy of Kagoj, was formally handed over to the Bangladesh Film Archive. The archive accepted the work as an example of the fusion of sculpture and cinema, and it is currently preserved and exhibited in the Bangladesh Film Archive Museum.[2][3][4][5]
Significance
[edit]The artwork has been described by Bangladeshi media as a rare example of film publicity using traditional terracotta craftsmanship. It has also been noted for integrating Bengali folk art into contemporary cinema promotion.[3][4][6][7]
